What makes a house a home?  As a born and raised Edmontonian, I have called Edmonton my home all my life, and no matter what side of the city I’ve lived on, I’ve never been more than an hour’s drive from my parents.  The uncles, aunts, and cousins I grew up with have all been within a half hour’s drive.  Or a really long bike ride as I discovered the one time I rode my bike from Callingwood to Londonderry more than 20 years ago.

I’ve never experienced living away from “home”.

My husband, Chris, is from Newfoundland.  Although he has lived here almost his entire adult life, I’m sure a part of him calls NL home and I know, especially through the pandemic, he misses his family terribly. When we got married, I never imagined how hard it would be…

I’ve always been attracted to the idea of volunteering.  There is definitely something rewarding about giving up your time, especially when you can see the results.  I can still remember clearly my first volunteer experience when I was 13, at the Misericordia hospital here in Edmonton.  I believe the inspiration came from reading Sweet Valley High novels, and the stories of one of the twins being a Candy Striper at the local hospital.  Or maybe it was Nancy Drew? Anyhow I soon found out that at our local hospital you didn’t get to start out pushing a magazine cart around, chatting with appreciative patients that told you how sweet you were and slipped $5 bills into your hands, or getting to work the cash register at the hospital gift shop.  No, at…

Airdrie Small Town Feel, Big City Amenities - Creb Now

Courtesy the city of Airdrie

With its storied history, convenient location and family-friendly atmosphere, Airdrie continue to attract young families and entrepreneurs in droves.

The city’s population has swelled from just under 11,500 to almost 71,000 in just 30 years. However, despite its growth, Airdrie has retained all the attributes of a connected village.

“We love the small-town feel, absolutely love it,” said artist Sandra Kliewer. She and her husband, Nathan, along with their three children and dog, moved to Airdrie four years ago from Mexico City, where they had been living and working for over seven years.

Although born and raised in B.C.’s lower mainland, the family had…

CREB has recently released an informational article on the beautiful Mount Pleasant community, in Calgary. Let's take a look together, and see what it has in store for us!

About Mount Pleasant:

The lands that became northwest Calgary’s Mount Pleasant community were annexed by the City in 1910, making it one of Calgary’s older neighbourhoods. When development began in the area in 1912, Calgary’s population numbered fewer than 50,000 people.

As the city grew to 100,000 people by 1947 and 200,000 by 1955, then-suburban Mount Pleasant experienced an influx of new amenities into the area when North Hill Centre opened its doors in 1958. The opening of the Tran-Canada Highway came four years later, establishing the new thoroughfare as the…

It’s no longer necessary to head downtown for sensational, handcrafted ice cream: the bustling suburbs of Calgary’s S.E. are getting sweet love from XO Ice Cream & Waffles. Owners Darren and Melanie, who live in the S.E. with their two children, were longing for quality ice cream close by. Darren decided to leverage his background in restaurant management to make this dream come true.

"We were looking for a community outside of the core that was missing a niche place like this," Darren says. "Our goal is to help make the S.E. suburbs the best place to live in Calgary and to be truly part of a community.”

Located in Auburn Station, XO is a modern-day interpretation of the mom-and-pop shop – a place where families come after school, meet…
